28 January 2012 | 9 puppies born! |
||||
Yesterday and tonight 9 puppies were born, 2 bitches and 7 dogs. Here is the birth-protocol: Report birth M-Litter: Glenna und Akai 27 and 28 January 2012.

13.30: Two contractions while she was standing up and hoop, there comes the first: Bitch, red band, 586 grams. Tail first, drinks
immediately, no dew claws, no white except twee half white toes. Have not seen the placenta. Glenna stretches out nicely in the box and feeds her first child. She does not have much milk yet. Sleeps like a rose. 14.45: The contractions start again. 15.11: Male, red/yellow band, 441 grams, came normal, placenta at the same time, is eaten, puppy has a very long tail, is very lively, drinks straight away, no dew claws. The milk begins to come now. Puppy’s happily drink together. Glenna has slept deeply for about 20 minutes. |

16.22: She has some very strong contractions but this puppy apparently does not want to come yet. She stands up. With a very strong contraction he shoots
out and bounces on the floor of the whelping box. I was just too late to catch him. Shock: when I picked him up and wanted to weigh him I say to my disgust that part of his intestines came out through his navel. Because of the force of the contractions he came but the placenta could not come so quickly so the umbilical cord was ripped off straight by his belly but. He cried heartbreakingly. What to do???? Immediately phoned my vet and asked if he could operate this. He was quite simple in his answer: if we do not try he will die for sure. Erik just came home a nd brought him quickly to the practise which is fortunately only a quarter of an hour away from our house. The doc. would try it, we could fetch him at about 18.30. Brrrr, just wait if this will go right. I felt miserable. Glenna did not understand what we were doing: pup in towels and vet beds and in a carton box and taken away… But she faithfully went back to her two other puppies after haven drunk half a litre of milk. She pants a lot. 17.30. Outside for a pee. 18.40. Erik comes back with the operated pup: operation was a success, neatly closed as if nothing ever happened. He cries terribly, probably from the anaesthesia. Now I can look at him properly: he is very big, very sleek coat, dark. He has not a band yet, let’s look first how things will go with him. |

![]() Green (Dog) 29-1-2012 535 gr. |
18.48: After two contractions: Male, green band, 495 gram. Came quick, wavy coat, dark, drinks strait away. Placenta is eaten. No white
and no dew claws. 19.15: After one contraction: Big Male, unfortunately dead, I thought I heard him cry out, but also with a strong massage, shaking him and giving him Respirot in the mouth there was no life in him. This puppy had no white and no dew claws. What a shame: he was totally fully grown and looked o.k. 20.10: Male, purple/blue band, 505 gram, very lively, drinks straight away. Placenta came also and is eaten. No white, this one has dew claws. |
![]() Purple-blue (Dog) 29-1-2012 594 gr. |
|||
![]() Gray (Dog) 29-1-2012 502 gr. |
20.20: One contraction: Male, grey band, 420 gram. Looks much bigger than that, is lively, and drinks straight away. Placenta came also
and is eaten. No white, no dew claws. 20.50 The operated puppy seems to be a little bit more quiet. Hopefully the anaesthetic will work off soon. He cries very much and seems in pain a lot. 21.45: Two contractions: Male, purple band, 430 gram. Is born in the placenta, at first seems a bit dopy but soon starts to drink and is more lively. Placenta is eaten. Glenna sleeps very deep, she gets the puppy’s apparently without much trouble. The last two were obviously lighter although they do not look smaller. All pups are quiet and drink very well. The operated puppy is really in pain and does not want to drink. |

![]() Light blue (Dog) 29-1-2012 612 gr. |
22.30: After some very strong contractions: Male, blue band, 540 gram. Here she obviously had more trouble getting him out. He is very
lively, drinks straight away; I have not seen the placenta. Big pup, no white and no dew claws. 0.30: I have given Glenna 0,3 oxitocine. She pants a lot, goes out of the box and lies on the flour. There must be another puppy but this one does not want to come yet. Operated puppy cries and cries. Glenna goes back to her kids, lets them drink patiently but keeps on panting. 2.25: She has been sleeping really good and deep. Did drink milk and water, does not want to eat. Given 0,5 oxitocine. This puppy needs some help to come from far away. 3.00: Two very strong contractions: Bitch, yellow band, 505 gram. Dark, very lively and drinks straight away. Placenta came and is eaten. |
![]() Yellow (Bitch) 29-1-2012 538 gr. |
|||
After this she had a few contractions, probably because of the 2 placentas which still have to come. Then she goes to sleep. The operated puppy screams and cries: is obviously in severe pain and does not want to drink. He seeks the warmth of his brothers and sisters and hides under them. During the night I thought three times: now it is enough, I will put him to sleep. This is almost unbearable to listen to. A small puppy like this must really have a lot of pain if he cries like this. Three times I picked him up to go and do it but three times I put him back with the others so that he would keep warm. He is obviously a fighter and a go-getter otherwise he would have died silently already. He is a very powerful pup with a very high mask and long tail. What is wisdom??? Putting him to sleep can be done only once and is irreversible! The other pups are quiet and nicely round. Fortunately Glenna now has enough milk; probably this is activated because she did eat all the placentas. |

Early in the morning I phoned the vet to see what we could do. He told me he did not give the puppy a painkiller because this is very bad for the kidneys. He obviously still
is in severe pain although this should not be like that. Also the anaesthetic should have worked of by now. I asked him to give a painkiller even if this would be bad for the kidneys, this way it can go not much longer. So Erik took him to the practise again: he got his painkiller and a shot of glucose concentrate under the skin because now he had not eaten the first crucial 20 hours of his life. Checked him through: operation was a total success. He gave extra painkillers and glucose for the first day. As soon as Erik came home with him I noticed: he was silent! Immediately I put him to Glenna and he started to drink as if it would save his life: which indeed it did! First I had to hold him because he was rather weak but after a few minutes he could do it for himself, including threading milk! Now I gave him his collar: dark blue, for now we have hope that it would go the right way. If also his intestines would start working it would be really super, but for that we have to be patience. The extra painkiller and glucose fortunately were not necessary because he drinks so well and obviously has no more pain. So far so good: we are 200% ahead of yesterday. If you see him lying between his litter mates he looks like a giant. At 13.15, even though he has not eaten for the first 20 hours of his life, he weighs 596 gram! After that he had to rest and he seemed a bit weak. Recovered excellent. At about 15.30 he finds the way to the tits by himself and begins to drink. This morning he started with a large tit, now he only wants this one for himself. Drinks at least 10 minutes. What he cannot do properly yet is push with his hind legs to keep his head up enough. He looks nicely round by now and did a pee. Glenna has washed him thoroughly so maybe he has pooped as well. That would be really good because it would mean his intestines are functioning properly! 16.00: He is satisfied. Does not cry anymore, in fact has not done it all day, and sleeps like a rose between his brothers and sisters. |

Now that I look at this happy litter I am very glad I did not give in to my strong feelings of pity and put him to sleep. It was really terrible to listen to: so much
misery and pain. It was really luck that Glenna did not panic. She accepted it and so did I, although with a lot of trouble. Now we have to wait how it will go with him, so far so good! Everybody who knows me better also knows that I really like breeding and everything that comes with it but also that I really hate births…… It is part of the deal and of course, after 39 litters, I have so much experience that there should be not many surprises anymore. But every time it is different, every time you have to take decisions about life and dead whether you want it or not. Every time I am sincerely happy when it is over and all puppies’s and mother sleep healthy in the box! Especially now! |

Genetische variatie: | |||||

|||
|||||
